2021/12/21ALBO, 1521-12-21

We departed from the Maluco Islands on Saturday, December 21st, of the year 1521, and we went to the island of Mare, and there we took in wood to burn, and the same day we sailed and steered S.S.W., making for Motil [Moti], and then we went by the same course, making for Maquian [Makian]. Then, we steered S.W., passing all these islands, and others: Cuayoan, Laboan, Agchian, Latalata, and other small islands, which are located in the N.W. area. Now I will note the latitude and longitude of each one separately, and state which contain cloves and other spices.

The first to the North is Terrenate [Ternate], which is at 1° N. Tidore at 40'. Mare at 15', and Motil is on the equinoctial line. They all lie North to South. The others to the South are these: Maqui lies at 20', Cuayoan at 40', and Laboan at 1°, Latalata at 1° 15', and Bachian lies E.N.E. – W.S.W with Terrenate. and to the S.E. of all these islands there is a very large island called Gilolo, and there are cloves on it, but very few. Therefore, there are seven islands which contain cloves, and those which have a large quantity are: Terrenate, Tidore, Motil, Maqui, and Bachian, which are the five principal ones, and some of them also contain nutmeg and mace. Motil is on the [equatorial] line, and is on 191° 45' meridian longitude [W] [the line that divided the Spanish and Portuguese dominions].

From Latalata we went to S.W.¼ W., and came upon an island named Lumutola. It is at 1°¾, and on the western side there is another island called Sulan. Near these islands there are many shoals, and from there we took a southern course towards an island named Buro [Buru], and between these three, there is another island named Fenado, it is at 2°½, Buro is at 3°½, and lies N.E. and S.W.¼ N.S. with Bachian at 194° longitude. To the East of Buro, there is a very large island called Ambon, in which they make much cotton cloth, and between it and Buro there are some islets, stay clear of them, thus it is necessary to coast the island of Buro along the East.
